Abstract

The California Gold Rush was the apocalyptic stage for California Indians. Once settlers made their mark, they decided they were ‘here to stay’ and created treaties to establish borders between themselves and the Natives. However, the treaties are disregarded because the U.S. had plans to acquire more land and resources. This attitude of entitlement over Indigenous peoples and their land continued with the Lyng v. Northwest Indian Cemetery case. Greed, entitlement, and racism are principles that depict Native nations as second class, or non-existent.
