Forest Service Projects, 'Digs' Prompt Criticism

Description

This article shows history and different points of view of Native American culture, as well as how Natives and Non-Natives could learn respect for Indigenous culture in Humboldt County with the guidance of the Northwest Indian Protective Cemetery Association.
The Native American Heritage Commission held a meeting to discuss two U.S.D.A. Forest Service projects that directly impact Native American cultural resources. First, the six mile construction of the Gasquet Orleans Road that transverses the sacred High County. This road was planned to lessen the economic impact from creation of Redwood National Park, but would have insurmountable impacts on Native American religious use of the area.
Second, the construction of Red Cap Bridge which would have an impact on the Karuk tribe's cultural resources where a World Renewal Ceremonies and village site is.
