GO Road Update

This document gives a timeline of the Gasquet Orleans Road proposed by Six Rivers Forest Service which runs through sacred land of the Yurok, Karuk, and Tolowa Tribes, leading up to the Supreme Court's 5-3 decision that will have lasting affects for all lands held sacred by Native people.

Even assuming that the Government's actions here will virtually destroy the Indians' ability to practice their religion, the Constitution simply does not provide a principle that could justify upholding respondent's legal claims. This gives the U.S. government the legal right to commit acts and develop policies, on public land, which result in the destruction of any religious group. If the government wishes to do something, their plans can automatically override religious freedom rights.
