Abstract

"I am personally very much opposed to the recommendation set forth in the Miller report and the efforts of the United States Forest Service to continue expansion within the high country region. The proposed Forest Service management of the Eight Mile/ Blue Creek Planning Unit does not provide for the significant isolation needed for the maximal continuance and flourishing of the American Indian religion of spiritual use of the high country region. The zoned set-aside areas are not significantly large enough to provide for complete and absolute silence that is necessary for medicine preparation or the silence necessary for the development in creation of nevi Indian songs."
"The new awareness of American Indians in the customs, religious beliefs and traditional heritage encouraging many young American Indian people to look more critically at themselves and the direction in which their personal motivations are taking them."
